Toronto/CityCentreAirport,inToronto,Ontario,CanadaisaregionalairportlocatedontheTorontoIslands.Openedin1939asthePortGeorgeVIAirfield,itbecamegenerallyknownastheIslandAirport.AtopeningitwasintendedtobeToronto‘sprincipalairport;asecondaryairportwasbuiltinMalton(nowpartofMississauga)foruseincaseofinclementweather.However,theserolesquicklybecamereversed,andtheMaltonAirportbecamethemainairport,aroleinwhichitcontinuestodayasTorontoPearsonInternationalAirport.In1994,thenamewasofficiallychangedtoTorontoCityCentreAirport,butmoststillcallitthe“IslandAirport.”Theoriginal1939woodenframeterminalbuildingisstillpresentandusedalthoughnotasacommercialpassengerterminal.Theonlymajorchangetothestructurewasachangetoslopingglassinthecontroltowertofacilitatenightoperations.
